弗吉尼亚·斯潘塞·卡尔，美国著名传记作家。 1929年7月21日生于佛罗里达，从12岁起就立志成为作家。北卡罗莱纳大学文学硕士，后被弗吉尼亚的林奇伯格学院授予名誉人文博士学位。从1985年到2003年退休，一直执教于亚特兰大的佐治亚州立大学英语系。 出生于美国南方的卡尔博士，一生都在探访研究南方作家的生平。她是研究卡森·麦卡勒斯的权威，除了本传记外，还出版了《解读卡森·麦卡勒斯》。她还为作家约翰·多斯·帕索斯、作家和作曲家保罗·鲍勒斯著书立传。目前她正在创作两部传记：一部关于女作家尤多拉·威尔蒂，另一部关于剧作家田纳西·威廉姆斯。
